Homily Helper #2, the day's Scripture Old-style. Leviticus tells of Moses delivering God's law. Jesus once more defends himself to disbelieving Jewish leaders.
Some heavy rewriting here if you don't mind . . .
In those days, the Lord spoke to Moses, telling him what to tell the people of Israel.
They must be a people apart, as He, God, is set apart.
They are neither to steal, lie, nor deceive another or swear falsely in the God’s name, nor wrong their neighbor in any way, for instance by robbery or withholding a servant’s wages until the next day.
They should not mock deaf people by calling them absurd names or block the way of a blind man, in each case ignoring God’s vengeance for such transgressions. They are to give every man his due.
They should not remain resentful but instead should confront the offender. They should neither seek revenge nor bear grudges; each must love his or her neighbor as himself or her self.
The Gospel?
The Jews again, challenging Jesus: "How long will you hold us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly."
Jesus: "I speak to you, and you believe not: the works that I do in the name of my Father, they give testimony of me. But you do not believe, because you are not of my sheep.
“My sheep hear my voice. And I know them: and they follow me. And I give them life everlasting: and they shall not perish for ever.
“And no man shall pluck them out of my hand. What my Father gave me is greater than all: and no one can snatch them out of the hand of my Father. I and the Father are one."
The Jews then took up stones to stone him.
Jesus: "Many good works I have showed you from my Father. For which of those do you stone me?"
The Jews: "It’s not for a good work we stone you, but for blasphemy, because you, being a man, make yourself God."
Jesus: "It is written in your own Scriptures that God said to certain leaders of the people, to whom the word of God was spoken, ‘I say, you are gods!’
“If he called them gods, what about me, whom the Father has sanctified and sent into the world? Do I blaspheme when I say I am the Son of God?
“If I do not do the works of my Father, don’t believe me. But if I do, believe the works, that you may know and believe that the Father and I are one."
